PROJECT NOTES: Project consisted of the refurbishing of a 1 km stretch of shoreline along the Rainy River in Fort Frances, Ontario. The refurbishing consisted of excavation to reclaim the area as park area and improve the aesthetics of the shoreline; improve the riprap of the shoreline to enhance the fish habitat of the river. One of the major areas of concern during the project was to control the sediment run off during the construction period as well as continued sediment run off from the roadway during storm water run off.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada was charged with the fish habitat of Rainy River and was concerned with controlling the runoff and improving the fish habitat of the area.
Engineering Northwest Ltd. (ENL) needed to address the shoreline protection, control construction sediment run off and protect the fish habitat during the construction project. Rob
Marasco of ENL specified a silt/turbidity barrier along the work area to catch the sediment runoff and the placement of sewn panels on the site to be used under the riprap for additional shoreline protection. BP Amoco’s Propex 4516, a heavy non-woven geotextile was used for this purpose.

Shane and Larry Armstrong, of George Armstrong Company Ltd. did the work and constructed the floating silt curtains and had a remarkable procedure in place for the sewing and diver assisted placement of the Propex 4516 and riprap.
