Malakwa Bridge Slope Treatment


Slope Stabilization Project featuring Profile Products

Malakwa, BC is located off the Trans Canada Highway between Sicamous and Revelstoke in the arid British Columbia interior. The region is punctuated with long slopes that flank the roadway and the Malakwa Bridge that runs across Eagle River. The slopes contained some vegetation, but due to the length of the slopes, any rain events could pose significan erosion damage. A solution was required to help mitigate erosion that was suitable for both the climate and the challenging topography.

Brock White was approached for a recommendation on whether the ProGanics™ Biotic Soil Media™ (BSM™) or EcoFlex™ HP (High Performance) Flexible Growth Medium™ from Profile Products would be a good solution to help establish vegetation and protection for the slopes on the side of the road near Malakwa.  

The following products were chosen because of the design constraints:
EcoFlex™ HP (High Performance) Flexible Growth Medium™ was the recommended hydromulch solution due to the steepness of the slope and the geographic climate.  Given the longevity afforded by using EcoFlex™ HP (High Performance) Flexible Growth Medium™ (up to 18 months), the project would receive erosion protection for a couple growing seasons.

ProGanics™ Biotic Soil Media™ (BSM™) is designed as a topsoil alternative to accelerate the development of depleted soils/substrates with low organic matter, low nutrient levels and limited biological activity. This product was chosen to assist in the germination process.
